I am an avid reader... Okay that was kind of like saying the ocean is big, better to say that even with a full-time job and something that passes for a life I still manage to read about three or four full length novels a week. Lately however I've been finding myself losing patience with authors who refuse to play to their strengths.
Take David Weber for example, his Honour Harrington series is mediocre except for a couple of truly exceptional books. Why, because even though He is great at doing character development and political intrigue, he can't write a battle to save his life! Yet his books are full of battles, space, land, duels.... They stink! Yet two books in that series I have included in my all time favorite list: Field of dishonour & In Enemy Hands. Both are excellent books that play to David Weber's strengths but sadly they are the exception to his writing not the rule. I had to give up on that series when I hit War of Honour; forget the people in the books being war weary, after nine books I was sick of the war too.
Well I'm sure you can all relate on some level after all it's not as if this is all that uncommon. Bah one can hope they see reason eventually.
